Streaming Video

Streaming video is a sequence of "moving images" that are sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed by the viewer as they arrive. Streaming media is streaming video with sound. With streaming video or streaming media, a Web user does not have to wait to download a large file before seeing the video or hearing the sound. Instead, the media is sent in a continuous stream and is played as it arrives. The user needs a player, which is a special program that uncompresses and sends video data to the display and audio data to speakers. A player can be either an integral part of a browser or downloaded from the software maker's Web site (citation).

Creating a Streaming Video file

There are two ways to create stored streaming video files:

  1. Use a conversion utility program such as Handbrake. This takes an existing digital video file such as a chapter of a DVD and converts it into the streaming format of your choice, in this case MPEG-4 (a very compressed format because DVD movies use very large files because of their high quality).

  2. Export streaming files from video editing software such as iMovie, Final Cut Pro, etc. If the video clip can be easily imported into a video editing program such as iMovie, it can be exported as a Quicktime movie for streaming.

II. Exporting a Hinted Video File for Streaming

Must get: QuickTime Pro; HandBrake and MakeRefMovie
Videos less than 3 minutes do not need to be hinted and can be put directly onto Blackboard.
If the file is over 3 minutes, we suggest creating a hinted movie and running it over our streaming server, VanBuren.

DVD
Use Handbrake to make mp4
Use Quicktime Pro

Chose File, Export Movie to Hinted Movie. This will make a .mov file.

If making longer movie (over 30 minutes, chose option, Optimize Hints for Server)
1. put .mov file on VanBuren (the streaming server)

2. Run MakeRefMovie. Chose "Movies", then choose movie from VanBuren, then "Movies"/add URL type rtsp://vanburen.choate.edu/
science/jgadoua/moviename*
then click Add; then File/save to save small .mov onto your desktop.

*(can cut and paste this URL into browser before clicking Add to make sure you typed it in correctly)

This will make a web address for the movie which will be within a small .mov file.
Within Blackboard, Add Item, then QuickTime type. For a DVD, use 720X480 (we think this is for 16X9) dimensions.

III. Copy the Hinted Video File to the Streaming Server

IV. Create the Quicktime Reference File

V. Embed the Reference File in a Blackboard Content Area
